Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention

"Talk Saves Lives" is an American Foundation of Suicide Prevention program that will provide you with a clear understanding of suicide, a leading cause of death.

You'll learn about the most up-to-date research on suicide prevention, and what you can do in your community to save lives. You'll learn common risk factors and warning signs of suicide, and how to keep yourselves and others safe. This webinar is presented by NAMI NYC and the NYC Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Topics covered include:

  • How big is this problem? The latest data on suicide in the U.S. and worldwide
  • What is the research? Information on what causes people to consider suicide, as well as health, historical, and environmental factors that put individuals at risk
  • Is there a way to prevent suicide? An understanding of the protective factors that lower suicide risk, and strategies for managing mental health and being proactive about self-care
  • What can I do? Guidance on warning signs and behaviors to look for, and how to get help for someone in a suicidal crisis

About the Speaker: Dionne Monsanto is the Executive Director of The Siwe Project, a mental health organization named after her late daughter, Siwe. She believes that telling her story continues her healing and keeps her daughter’s memory alive.

Shortly after the death of her 15-year-old daughter by suicide, Dionne left her 20-year financial services career and became a full-time yoga and dance teacher. Since then, she has taught thousands of classes internationally.

Dionne has been on the board of the NYC Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) since 2014 and has completed a 3-year term as Chair of the Board. She is a native New Yorker who began her work with AFSP in 2009 with their Community Walk in NYC, moved on to Advocacy (locally and nationally), became a board member, and then part of their speaker’s bureau. She has trained the NYPD and community organizations. She speaks passionately about - and trains people internationally on - mental health awareness and suicide prevention. As the current chair of the Education Committee, she led the first "Talk Saves Lives" training via Zoom.
