Media and Mental Health

In episode 4 of Generation Change, Vicki Harrison of the Stanford Center for Youth Mental Health hosts a panel of youth guests from Allcove and the #GoodforMEdia project to discuss how online spaces impact their emotional wellbeing.

#GoodforMEdia is a peer mentoring campaign for older teens and young adults to share their personal stories, insights and strategies with younger teens and tweens to support their healthy engagement with technology and social media.

Tune in to hear from:

Vicki Harrison

Vicki is program director of the Center for Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing within Stanford’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She has over 20 years of experience working within the public health, education and mental health sectors developing and managing innovative, community-based programs at the local, state, national and international levels. At the Center, she develops and directs a broad portfolio of projects promoting wellbeing, early intervention and increased access to mental health services, particularly for young people ages 12-25. She is leading the technical assistance team implementing allcove - a first of its kind integrated youth mental health model in the U.S.; as well as building a national media and mental health initiative, partnering with the media, mental health and technology sectors to enhance the positive impact of media on youth mental health and wellbeing.

Emily Chan

Emily is a junior in high school. She is involved with #goodforMEdia because she wants to decrease the stigma around discussing mental health. Growing up in the Bay Area, she has become acutely aware of how much people — specifically teens and young people — need a safe space to discuss, share, and learn more about this subject. She tries to use social media in a positive way to enhance her mental health and wellness and wants to help other kids navigate the balance between social media and overall wellbeing.

Zoe Adelsheim

Zoe is currently a sophomore majoring in neurobiology with a minor in health care social Issues at UC San Diego. She is passionate about social justice and advocacy, particularly surrounding mental health. She got involved with #goodforMEdia because so many youth use social media, and it is important that they have strategies and ideas to make sure that it has a positive impact on their mental health.

Kyra Black

Kyra is currently a sophomore at UC San Diego majoring in marine biology with a minor in environmental systems. In addition to mental health advocacy, she is very passionate about climate change mitigation and the conservation of marine ecosystems. She became involved with #goodforMEdia to help youths develop a healthier relationship with social media and to destigmatize conversations about mental health.

Jeremy Peng

My name is Jeremy Peng, and I joined YAG because I thought it was something where a youth like me could really affect the community and change for the better. I think mental health is an invaluable part of everyday life that just gets overlooked most of the time. I want to support my community and help out as many people as I can.

Joshua Yang

Joshua Yang is a senior at Henry M. Gunn High School in Palo Alto. He joined allcove as a Youth Advisory Group member to address teen mental health concerns in the local community — and to foster more open conversations about mental health. Outside of allcove, he's an avid student journalist, boba lover and Doctor Who fan.

Acerca de Generation Change

The data on adolescent health and educational success in the US is of great concern. High rates of depression, alcohol and drug abuse, teen pregnancy, youth violence, and low college graduation rates compared to other industrialized nations indicate that something is missing in our support for young people.

We need a new culture of adolescent wellbeing across the United States that builds skills, resilience, and opportunities for a healthy path into adulthood. Through this series, we'll hear from youth and experts on topics including early intervention strategies, Asian American youth mental health, Native American youth mental health, the role of media in wellbeing, and more.

Join Stanford and Made of Millions as we explore how to better support our young people as they transition into adulthood and realize their full potential. Learn more about Stanford's Center for Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing on Instagram @stanfordyouthmh.
